How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on ProperlyComfy starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our foot massager guides, that means the style of massage you like, the size of your feet and how loud you can live with it.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the feet and the feel

Foot massagers differ in kneading style, heat, air squeeze and how much room they give your feet. A size that suits one person can feel tight on another.

We check the foot size the maker lists, the heat and intensity settings, and the controls. When size limits the choice, we say what to measure.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at kneading and roller style, heat, air compression, timers, auto shut-off, remote controls, cord length and noise. For foot spas, we add tub size, bubbles, heat and drain options.

We also note the warranty terms the maker lists. When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a massager. We look for patterns, like heat that fades, nodes that rattle, covers that tear, controls that stop working or machines that run loud.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one buyer may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Renpho, MIKO, Nekteck and others sell several models with similar names, so we check each model name and code before we write about it.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every massager we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. For heat, power, water and cleaning, follow the maker's directions.

We write about comfort and gifts only. We make no medical or therapy claims and give no health advice, so if you have a health condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor before you use any massager.
